Milngavie Medley
This year we launch our all new Milngavie Medley Festival “fringe” – with music, dance, story-telling and crafts for all the family. The Medley takes place on Saturday 10 September 2011 at various venues throughout Milngavie – see below for details.
Musical Medley
Bearsden Academy
The Medley opens at 10am in the precinct with performances by a group of talented pupils from Bearsden Academy (who this year are celebrating their school’s centenary!).
Appearing will be Olivia Naio and Katie Hart (voice and guitar), Ewan on trumpet and Iain on sax.
The rest of our fabulous line-up is as follows:
Them Beatles
Our headline act for Milngavie Medley 2011 is the popular Beatles tribute act, Them Beatles.
“We brought in Them Beatles to help with the launch of The Beatles Rockband Game and they brought down the house.” HMV Glasgow
“Great live band! They captured the essence and energy of The Beatles perfectly.” Gregor James, guitarist for Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
A treat in store for all, particularly Beatles fans of all ages… Saturday 10 September at 2.00pm in Milngavie Precinct.
The Rosie Nimmo Band
Precinct Stage: 11.30am
Following appearances at Celtic Connections, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we’re delighted to welcome Rosie and her band to the Milngavie Book & Arts Festival.
“..a haunting collection of spare, subtle songs meditating on the magic and trials of life.’ The List, on Rosie’s first album ‘Lazy and Mellow’. October 2009.
“‘Home’ is an exquisite disc, one whose songs really haunt you, grow into you almost subliminally and yet also have an immediate musical appeal.” David Kidman, Netrhythms.
“…like it a lot. Great voice, nicely produced.” Ian Rankin
“Utterly enchanting…” Blues Matters magazine.
Close Shave Chorus
Station Road Marquee, 3pm
Something that little bit different: male voice, a cappella (4 part harmony) chorus, comprising 16 guys of a certain age and a definite je ne sais quoi – and who enjoy singing.
“Close Shave are an a cappella outfit who sing in a loose, barbershop style. Their songs are drawn mainly from the “Great American Song-Book”, with numbers from Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart and a whole string of writers and composers of that time. Close Shave won the Orpheus Trophy for male choral singing at the Glasgow Music Festival in 2005 and sing regularly at private functions, corporate events and festivals.”
Dunbartonshire Wind Ensemble
Back by popular demand!
Station Rd Marquee, 12.30pm
Last year this talented group of young (and young-at-heart) musicians entertained a delighted audience with a selection of tunes from film and stage. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back and hoping the sun will shine again for their performance this year!

Blue Dubh
Precinct stage, 4pm
Their eclectic mix of slide guitar, harmonica and horns provides an authentic taste of the Delta blues and a suitably laidback platform for their soulful vocal harmonies: “Authentic blues feel with a dirty harmonica, lazy slide and soulful vocals”. Oo-er missus!
This year Blue Dubh will be bringing you an acoustic set.
Liquid City
An acoustic set by local musicians Diane and Alasdair McKee of Liquid City, at 11am in the Marquee.
And there’s more in our Medley…
Nostalgia Medley
Lindy Hop
Fashion’s big look for 2011-12 is the 1940s, so don’t miss our Lindy Hop dancers from Zoot Swing and the Glasgow Swing Dance Society to get a flavour of the decade.
In the meantime, here’s a taster, with Scottish Lindy Hoppers celebrating the 95th birthday of Frankie Manning (the founder of Lindy Hop!)
Check back soon for time and venue.

Storytime Medley – Milngavie Bookshop
Donald Nelson, Storyteller
Milngavie bookshop 11.00 am. Free event
Glastonbury to Milngavie…. come and hear stories, poems and songs with Donald, a veteran of the Glastonbury Kidzfield. In his words: “There is nothing children (and adults) like better than a good story. Storytelling can take their minds to places that no computer game, film or television programme ever could.”

Badger the Mystical Mutt
By local authors McNicol & Jackson, Badger the Mystical Mutt is the first in a series of illustrated children’s stories for 5- to 8-year-olds, addressing issues such as bullying, disability and prejudice.
“It was a quarter past midsummer. In a garden, next to a lane, Badger the Mystical Mutt… had gathered all the ingredients for his fabulous new spell . . . Meanwhile, in the lane at the bottom of the garden, all was not well. Hamish was running for his life.”
Pet Idol is in town, and Hamish, a floppy-eared spaniel, is the favourite to win. But as the spotlight falls on the lane, Top Dog and his gang of strays are hunted by the Dog Catcher, and blame Hamish for their troubles. With his haphazard magic, an appetite for toast and a strange travelling machine, can Badger the Mystical Mutt save Hamish from Top Dog and his gang? And can Hamish still win Pet Idol?
“Funny, exciting, clever, and great fun with a mystical twist” School Librarian
Meet Badger the Mystical Mutt at Milngavie Bookshop on Saturday 10th at 12.30pm. Reading and book signing.
